iPhone Mediaserver – This Is So Cool

by Paul Colligan on February 26, 2010

MediaServer is one of those iPhone apps that makes you realize how cool the whole iPhone (and one day soon, iPad) platform is.

The app lets you play media from your iPhone on your PS3, XBox 360, Boxee, etc.  It does this through a little tech (that doesn’t get enough attention) called UPnP.  It’s the same tech that lets you watch Hulu on the Xbox.  Basically you launch the MediaServer app on the iPhone/iPod Touch and the content is then available on anything that supports the protocol.  You just browse and play the files. No, I’m not making it sound too easy – this is just one of the programs and protocols that actually works as described.

Now, how do you get these files on your iPhone?  Use any FTP client.  It’s screaming fast too.  You have to be on the same wifi network to make that happen – but it’s really easy.

What can you do with something like this?  Lots!  Here are a few usage recommendations:

  • Have a training video that deserves to be watched on the TV (YouTube Secret Weapon anyone?)?  Quickly place it on the iPhone and watch it on the same xBox 360 you used to think was only good for blasting bad guys.
  • Forget sharing family movies (or, let’s admit it, some wacky viral video) on that tiny little iPhone screen.  Keep a gig or two of great stuff available for whenever anyone is ready to watch and stream right to their PS3.
  • You get the idea.  Heck, post a few more ideas below in the comments.

The guys from Particle-S have something very special here.  If I can only say one thing – PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THE LOGICAL PROGRESSION OF WHERE THIS THING CAN GO.  Imagine a Video Podcast client or some other content receipt mechanism tied into this thing …

Did I mention this thing is less than a Venti Coffee at Starbucks?

Hello, Could somebody please tell me how to access media files using this app (I just bought it via AppStore) through Windows Media Player? I can't see the device when I turn on Media Sharing in WMP. I tested iMediaShare that its just for photos, and WMP saw it instantly, but with MediaServer it doesn't see it.

    Thank you.

I've been using this for the past month.. I've reviewed the app in the app store, under name DylanDesign.

It's a great tech, but I'm not sure the iPhone is such a terrific (or powerful enough) platform for such a server.

Basically, if I have too many files\sub directories uploaded to the server, my PlayStation 3 will not recognise the content - to the extent it just times out when trying to access the server. I know the error is on the mediaservers end, and not the PlayStation's, because other mediaserver softwares have demonstrated the very same issue on windows and OSX playforms (on desktop servers\PC's). This issue has been amended by fixes on the server's software, not the PS3's.

Moreover, the ftp upload tends to drop out constantly, and I have to restart the mediaserver app to get a connection again - causing glitches in the files I upload. This app is overdue for an update and extra features.

I have, however, managed to upload and play a couple of avi movies.

Thank you for the comments Dylan. I know the guys who made the app monitor this page so they'll get this too.

Well Erik, it's a great product. And I meant what I said about future versions of this thing.
